Summer is delicious, rain is refreshing,
wind braces up, snow is exhilarating;
there is no such thing as bad weather,
only different kinds of good weather.

Say Bye Bye to Summer
by Carol Riggles
Hurricane Isabel has now come and gone,
and I was one of the lucky ones - I only
lost my phone service for a short time.
My neighbors were not so lucky and will be
spending most of their beautiful fall weekends
repairing the damage caused by the high winds.
I took advantage of the advanced hurricane warning
and cleared my deck of all the furniture, decorations,
toys, and all the miscellaneous clutter that had
accumulated over the summer.
Before I put anything back out on the deck I will be
cleaning and treating the deck - an annual chore I
really detest. Other projects include cleaning the
patio furniture, and packing up the summer toys and
decorations for another year.
Finding some place to keep all this stuff isn't as
difficult as you may think if you use a rotation
system for storing seasonal items. The summer
stuff will get put away but the fall stuff will be
unpacked at the same time so that the same
storage area can be used for both.
You can even use the same storage containers -
simply change the labels. I like creating a clear
plastic pocket label holder on the storage box that
holds index cards. You can make your own by
cutting page protectors to the right size and taping
them to the boxes along the sides and bottom with
clear packing tape. Then just write the names of the
months or seasons that are applicable for your
storage needs and slip them all in the pocket with
the appropriate card label visible. One 8.5 x 11 inch
page protector should yield 8 label pockets because
you don't need two thicknesses of plastic - just one.

A guy took his girlfriend to her first football game.
Afterward he asked her how she liked the game.
"I liked it, but I couldn't understand why they were
killing each other for 25 cents," she said.
"What do you mean?" he asked.
"Well, everyone kept yelling, 'Get the quarter back!'"

Don't Put Away Your Gardening Tools
Summer may be over but there's still plenty of
planting to do. Your hard work this fall will pay off
before you know it. Now is a good time for small,
shallow-rooted vegetables like lettuce, radishes,
carrots, spinach, garlic and lettuce.
For flowers, think small-statured annuals like
pansy, dwarf marigold and viola planted in
containers as small as 2 gallons. For your garden,
you can also consider calendula, snapdragon,
stock and ornamental kale for October planting.
Fall is also an excellent time to plan ahead for
next season's garden. If you've considered converting
grassy areas into a new garden, then now's the time
to do it. Find a sunny area and grab a spade and plow.
Turn the dirt several times and sow a crop cover such
as winter rye for extra support. By doing this now the
grass will have a chance to break down over the
winter months.

:: TIME-SAVING IDEA ::
========================
Fall is a popular time of the year for
repainting things - inside and outdoors,
but sometimes the paint job can't be
completed at one time or in one day.
There is no need to clean your paint
brushes and rollers before the job is done.
Simply put the brushes and rollers in an
airtight plastic bag. The next day when you
are ready to use them again they will still be
as moist and soft to use as when you put
them in there. If there will be several days
between uses, you can place the bagged
brushes and rollers in the refrigerator.
I hate cleaning up after painting, especially
after using oil-based paint. Now I can do a
little bit on each painting project every day,
instead of having to find a time when I can
get a few hours to devote to a project.
Plus, this little trick can really save some
time - time that is better spent enjoying the
pleasantly cool and sunny fall weather.
